Caesar, een kleine chimpansee, groeit op in de beschermde wereld van het circus. Zijn ouders werden gedood omdat ze te veel menselijke trekken hadden. Op een dag neemt de circuseigenaar Caesar weg uit zijn vertrouwde omgeving en toont hij hem de echte wereld. Caesar ziet hoe zijn soortgenoten als slaven behandeld worden en vooral dom gehouden worden. De aap kan deze onrechtvaardigheid niet aanzien en hij komt in opstand. Hierdoor verraadt hij zijn intelligentie, waardoor de jacht op mensapen opnieuw wordt geopend.
