Francis Barnard gaat naar Spanje als hij hoort dat zijn zuster Elizabeth is overleden. Haar echtgenoot, Nicholas Medina, de zoon van de ergste martelaar van de Spaanse inquisitie, vertelt hem dat zij is overleden aan een bloedziekte, maar Francis vindt dit moeilijk om te geloven. Na enig onderzoeken ontdekt hij dat het extreme angst was die haar fataal geworden is en dat zij mogelijk levend begraven werd. Dan beginnen er vreemde dingen te gebeuren in het Medina-kasteel.
